Toronto Maple Leafs - When we don't change things - We are choosing to SUCK!

I have been following the Leafs this season and for a team with such great potential, a hockey club with tremendously talented players- they don’t seem to be pulling it together. Just goes to show you – you can have all the ingredients, still does not guarantee success. Much like the obese person that continues to stuff their face with twinkies, wondering why there has been no weight loss the Leafs need to make some changes and in this case I think they would best benefit from external resources. What we focus on brings results – plain and simple. Thought has energy, and yes the ability to influence, (scientifically). Put another way, our brains have patterns – combined thought and patterns, this shows up as a force that then translates into an experience, or a result if you will. In the case of our Toronto hockey club, focusing on failure and lack of results produces more of the same. Patterns are basically a reference of what to expect. Our references are accessed in our brain through memories from the past. These memories are emotionally charged and emotions integrated with our stored reference patterns create a predictable outcome. It is also what we are most comfortable with. It is quite easy to fall into them and feel on some level, that things just keep happening that way and perhaps at times that results are beyond our control - it's an illusion. It takes something to interfere with these patterns and create new ones. It has been a challenging season for the Leafs beginning the pre-season with several losses that have carried through. Observing them, personally, I see there is an expectation of failure and expectation can be incredibly powerful. Just like the Senator’s expect to be able to play comparably to last season – so do the Leafs. With each game they lose, each play they muck up, their patterns are being reinforced. The players seem to be falling into personal ruts and as they do this any semblance of ‘team’ disappears lowering the probability of turning things around in time for this season. Matts, on an independent level seems to be performing, however, to produce the results they desire ‘Team’ is necessary. In 1992, Anthony Robbins worked with the LA Kings to create resourceful mental states with the coach and the team of the LA Kings to improve their game. They made it to the play-offs. I think it is time they bring in other resources to curtail the out of control downward spiral - we all seem to be witnessing. At the beginning of the season Paul Maurice made a statement, ‘we will make the playoffs’, he said it with a painful look on his face that had me convinced he didn’t believe it. When we have a relationship to things as if they are broken and need fixing, we are operating from a negative. It’s when we take on learning and acknowledge what has been working and what can still be further developed a shift can begin to take place. Paul Maurice, presumably, is concerned for his position and I think he can be a great Coach – we all need to learn to acknowledge when something is not working for us and have the courage to seek out the resources that can make a difference ~ be willing to find what can be effective. This is a choice.
