I'm very curious about what is going on in Hollywood right now. Britney Spears, Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and now Owen Wilson. I believe these people are an examples of the average individual struggling with personal conflict, only amplified and put under a mirco scope. It's our wake up call to change our thinking, become more connected, share our fears knowing we ALL suffer at times regardless whether we let people in on it or not. Every single person on this planet has issues. If you are breathing - you have them! You may not be aware of many of them, or think they are in fact other people, be numb to them, or, you may hide them pretend they don't exist like Owen, often we don't indicate when we are experiencing a major challenge until we are screaming for help.
Our hearts go out to Owen. We feel sadness and I'm sure some people will not understand this. I imagine much of the world will be reacting with the feeling Owen Wilson should be happy. I mean after all, he has achieved great success both financially and professionally, and travels in some exclusive circle with his pick of Hollywood starlets, and a handsome man and at the height of his career!...Right? Not necessarily. What if you had all that and still weren't happy with yourself or were unable to find true joy or value in life? Or have a relationship with out sabotaging it? Or you felt somehow you didn't deserve success? Yet, you knew you had a lot and couldn't figure out yourself why you weren't happy and resented yourself for it.
According to www.imdb.com, Owen went on record saying he made a mistake letting Cheryl Crow go and that he regretted hurting her - that he does want to settle down “this shows he is compassionate, responsible for his actions and yet clearly he struggles with himself and commitment, perhaps it's the lifestyle of Hollywood. It is very common for Acting, Media, Sports and Fashion Industry to become not just a job but also a lifestyle. The dark side of this industry is filled with lost souls and hollow habits like promiscuous sex and substance abuse. Wilson was reportedly involved with Kate Hudson up until June and there is speculation that the break up contributed significantly to the suicide attempt. This past weekend Kate Hudson was reportedly photographed kissing Dax Shepard, apparently a friend of Owens the kind of guy that can settle down. Coincidence?... Or possibly the final straw. Perhaps he realized if he let a great women go again - he deserved to be alone forever. Maybe he felt like a failure struggling with personal addictions, pushing people away…when he knew he could feel more grateful for the opportunity to love a wonderful women - or more thankful for what he has achieved his status as an A list Hollywood actor.
It is common for people to despise themselves when they continue to make poor choice. So in a nut shell, What would drive a Hollywood actor/comedian to do this? Simple, his thoughts. He reached some point in his thinking, where all he could see was the negative, all his recent experiences perceived as painful. There is clearly some disconnect between his actions in life and his desired actions and outcomes, obviously he was suffering intensly. This is a war - a war, sadly human beings have with themselves. Celebrities are not exempt.
A great book or CD set is entitled the Power of NOW. Author, Ekhart Toll talks of waking one night with anxiety, though this was normal, he worried all the time, this night in particular he had extreme fear and anxiety and emotional pain and though; 'I just can't live with myself anymore'; his subsequent thought is the interesting one, 'well if I can't live with myself anymore there must be two of me'. It is this division of self, struggling with different levels of his personality that had him feel, in that moment, it was the only way out - his thoughts dark and just consumed by his emotional pain. And it will be something around feeling powerless to change circumstance or make new choices, whether it be to do with his escape patterns of drug, alcohol, or relationship patters, identity we are unaware of - either way they are all thinking patterns which he has becomes a victim to. He felt trapped. Like he had no power over his thoughts. Low self esteem is simply engaging in thinking patterns that are self deprecating, on a regular basis. Approximeately 78% of people fall into this. Negative thinking make no mistake IS an epidemic! I am not certain of the stat but I do know it is high for the number of people that have had suicidal thoughts, at least one time in their lives, when going through extreme life circumstances, I believe it is above well above 60%. All people struggle with thought patterns in different areas of life. The obesity issue, drugs, gambling, alcohol abuse, sex addictions, excessive television, simply people attempting to escape their thoughts because we do not understand our brain patterns, our emotional addictions and how to create lasting changes and fulfillment in our lives or live in the moment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), someone around the globe commits suicide every 40 seconds. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide.1 Despite a commonly held myth that the Christmas season has the highest suicide rate of all the seasons, studies have proven that across North America, suicide rates are actually lower at that time of year.1 Late July and August have the highest suicide rate out of all the months of the year. Some studies suggest that the increase is due to the seasonal change and that this period is one that often brings about changes in personal situations as well. It is suggested that all these elements of change – whether there are dramatic changes happening in someone's life, or whether someone feels defeated because their situation seems to never change – can lead people to suicide. (World Health Organization) What we can do for Owen, is send healing thoughts and prayers. We don't need to understand why he did it, he probably doesn't know himself. Forgive him. He doesn't need outside judgment he will already be struggling to forgive himself and with the stigma associated with suicide that will be a challenge in itself. We can expect Owen Wilson to break through something tough over the weeks to come and wait for him to share it with the world, possibly gifting us with some insight that will help us a little bit when we experience our own challenges and life breakdowns. For example we are already reminded how import it is to control our thoughts and focus on thoughts and thought patterns that support us. To ALWAYS ask for help if at any point you are feeling overwhelmed. We can also keep an eye on people we know have stress in their lives and provide and ear, empathy and a little support. I imagine his press camp will be concerned about young people thinking this might be cool because 'Owen Wilson did it' – so I would expect some recovery efforts very shortly. Mental health claims (especially depression) have overtaken cardiovascular disease as the fastest growing category of disability costs in Canada, I am not sure on stat for the states currently or world wide – I would guess very high, negative thinking is an epidemic. Depression is often negative thinking, repeatedly and a series of reactive poor choices, resulting in further negative thinking as a lifestyle. Eventually this gets labeled 'mental illness'. We need to teach people how to think and heal when they go through challenging experiences.
