Help for a family memeber
Hey there,
I just joined the forums a couple days back and am wondering if anyone here knows of a good program/place to help one of my relatives who's dealing with alcoholism. I know there's an AA group in toronto, but I was wondering if there are other options that might be availaible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Kinga

Hi Kinga,
I think AA is a wonerful program and I also believe it is import to address the source of any problem along with the symptoms. Once the drinking seizes the "source" needs to be healed. It is very important that this person begin to vizualize a future without alcohol that is fulfilling and something to look forward too - otherwise it is probable there will be repeat behavior, the likely hood of which increase with the onset and intensity of stress.
I would suggest doing some research and subsequently evaluating which course of aciton is most suitable for your family members particular circumstance. It may be that you create several structures of support with this person to aid them in their success in over coming it.
There is a company called Smart Recovery and it an abstinence-based, not-for-profit organization that uses common sense self-help procedures designed to empower participants to abstain and to develop a more positive lifestyle. This is a company I suggest you read further on and then choose- it may be a great supplemental program with AA. Either way my recommendation is; do thorough research, to be in an alcohol recovery program of some sort combined with personal discovery work and a little prayer too.
